Spring of Banias river, one of the main tributory of the Jordan River
The disciples earlier asked each other who Jesus was (4:35-41). Later, in the vicinity of the Banias waterfall near Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples this question (8:27-38). Caesarea Philippi was a religious center from the early third century BC to the fifth century AD. In the background is a cave that housed a shrine to the god Pan. In Greek religion and mythology, Pan was the patron of shepherds.
