Ps 133 title On ascents, see note at Ps 120 title.
133:1 Brothers can denote any fellow Israelite. The psalmist holds up unity as an ideal.
133:2-3 Unity in a society is compared to extravagant blessing of consecrating oil (see notes at 23:5; 36:8; 89:20; and 92:10) or dewfall on dry ground (Gn 27:28; Pr 19:12). Zion was the epitome of blessing because there God commanded (appointed) eternal life—possibly alluding to what Christ accomplished in Jerusalem.
