The ocean was a double-edged sword for the people of biblical times. As it offered a plentiful source of food, it often was a deadly endeavor for many marine voyagers. Frequently mentioned as a symbol of death, the ocean inhabited many dangers from stormy seas to warring enemies. Water has an inherent duality in relation to man as a giver and taker of life.
