Does the Bible Say the Earth is Flat?
The Bible does not explicitly state that the Earth is flat. However, some interpretations of certain biblical passages have been used historically to argue that the Bible suggests a flat Earth. These interpretations often focus on specific verses that describe the Earth in ways that can be construed as flat or stationary. Here are a few examples:
Isaiah 40:22 - "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers." The word "circle" (Hebrew: "chug") has been interpreted by some as indicating a flat, circular Earth. However, others argue it can also be interpreted as a sphere or simply a reference to the horizon.
Job 26:10 - "He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness." This passage describes the horizon, which some flat Earth proponents argue supports their view, although it can also describe the curvature of the Earth.
Revelation 7:1 - "After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth..." Some have interpreted the mention of "four corners" to imply a flat, rectangular Earth. However, this phrase is generally understood as a metaphorical way of referring to the whole Earth, akin to the modern expression "the four corners of the globe."
